Can Shade Netting Be Washed and Restitched?

Yes—shade netting can often be washed and restitched if the fabric is still in suitable condition. A dirty shadeport roof or an opening seam does not automatically mean the entire net needs replacing.

The important distinction is between stitching that needs attention and fabric that has deteriorated beyond worthwhile repair.

When can restitching help?

Restitching may be suitable when the thread along seams or joins has started failing, but the surrounding netting remains strong enough to hold new stitching.

Before deciding, the assessment should consider the seams, edges, attachment points and overall fabric condition. Repairing a seam is only worthwhile if the material around it can support the repair.

Why do we wash shade nets before restitching?

At Shadeport Specialist, our refurbishment process includes washing the removed netting, allowing sufficient time for it to air-dry, and then restitching.

This addresses accumulated dirt as well as worn stitching. A thorough wash can leave suitable netting looking noticeably cleaner and brighter.

However, cleaning does not make old fabric new again or reverse damage caused by prolonged sun exposure. The result depends on the condition of the netting before work begins.

Can tree sap and every stain be removed?

Not always. In our experience, tree sap can work into the netting and harden like glue. Some deposits and discolouration may remain even after thorough washing.

Trying to remove every mark with aggressive chemicals or unsuitable solvents can cause further problems. Cleaning methods must suit the particular fabric and follow its manufacturer’s care guidance.

The aim is to clean the netting without damaging it—not to promise that every stain will disappear.

When is replacement more appropriate?

If the fabric has widespread deterioration, tears easily or has extensive damage, restitching alone will not solve the underlying problem.

Age is useful background information, but it should not be the only deciding factor. Sun exposure, weather, installation condition and maintenance history also matter.

Netting refurbishment is also separate from work on the supporting structure. Problems with cables, fixings or steelwork need their own assessment; washing and restitching will not correct them.
