How Often Should a Shadeport or Carport Be Inspected?

A shadeport or carport that appears to be in good condition should receive a visual check by the property owner at least once a year. It should also be checked after severe wind, hail, heavy storms, falling branches, vehicle impact or any other event that may have caused damage.

 

A professional inspection should be arranged whenever damage or noticeable changes develop, as part of the planned maintenance service at approximately five years, and again at around ten years.

 

Commercial installations, unusually large structures and carports in exposed or high-wind locations may require more frequent checks based on their design, use and site conditions.

 

Routine Visual Checks vs Professional Inspections

A routine visual check is a ground-level inspection that helps the property owner identify visible changes before they develop into more serious problems.

 

It does not require climbing onto the structure, removing shade netting or roof sheets, loosening fittings or attempting to adjust the tension.

 

A professional inspection is more detailed. Depending on the type of structure, it may include assessing the shade net, stitching, perimeter cable, steel framework, welds, fasteners, columns, foundations, roof sheets, flashing, gutters and drainage.

 

Professional attention is recommended if the property owner notices any deterioration, unusual movement or change from the structure’s normal condition.

 

Why Are Regular Inspections Important?

Shadeports and carports remain exposed to sunlight, ultraviolet radiation, wind, rain, temperature changes and airborne pollution throughout the year.

 

Shade net structures also rely on correctly maintained fabric, stitching, perimeter cables and tension. Solid-roof carports rely on securely fastened roof sheets, weatherproof flashing and effective rainwater drainage.

 

Small problems such as deteriorating stitching, damaged paintwork, loose fasteners or minor corrosion can usually be addressed more easily when identified early.

 

If left unattended, these problems may allow the shade net to loosen, steelwork to corrode, roof sheets to move or water to enter areas that should remain protected.

 

Recommended Shadeport and Carport Inspection Schedule

At Least Once a Year

Carry out a careful visual inspection from ground level.

 

Compare the structure with its normal condition and look for:

 

  • Changes in shade net tension

  • Loose, sagging or uneven sections

  • New tears, worn areas or opening seams

  • Rust marks along the shade net’s perimeter seam

  • Peeling or flaking paint

  • Developing rust on the steel framework

  • Loose or missing fasteners

  • Cracked welds or connections

  • Leaning columns or visible structural movement

  • Loose, lifted or damaged roof sheets

  • Leaks, damaged flashing or blocked gutters

 

Photographs taken from the same positions each year can make gradual changes easier to recognise.

 

After Severe Weather or Accidental Damage

Inspect the structure after unusually strong wind, hail, heavy rain, falling branches or a vehicle impact.

 

Pay particular attention to:

 

  • A shade net that has become noticeably looser

  • Excessive ballooning during gusts

  • Torn fabric or failed stitching

  • Displaced cables, corners or fittings

  • Bent or damaged steel members

  • Cracked welds or disturbed connections

  • Loose, lifted or dented roof sheets

  • New leaks or damaged flashing

  • Gutters or downpipes displaced by the storm

  • Movement or cracking around column foundations

 

Damage is not always immediately obvious. A structure that appears generally intact may still have a loosened connection, damaged cable or displaced roof-sheet fixing.

 

When Any Change Is Noticed

Do not wait for the next planned maintenance interval if the shadeport or carport begins behaving differently.

 

Arrange an assessment when you notice increasing looseness, new noises, abnormal movement, rust staining, recurring leaks, loose components or any visible structural change.

 

Identifying the cause is important. For example, a loose shade net may result from deteriorated stitching, a stretched or corroded perimeter cable, permanently stretched fabric or movement within the supporting structure.

 

Simply pulling the net tighter without finding the cause may place additional strain on the fabric, seams, cable and steel framework.

 

What Should Be Checked on a Shade Net Structure?

The shade net and its tensioning system should be inspected for:

 

  • Loose, sagging or uneven tension

  • Excessive ballooning during windy conditions

  • Brittle, dry, faded or weakened fabric

  • Permanent stretching or distortion

  • Tears, cuts or abrasive wear

  • Deteriorating stitching

  • Opening seams or joins

  • Loose corners or fittings

  • Brown rust marks along the perimeter seam

  • Frayed or protruding cable wires

  • Areas where the net rubs against branches or steelwork

  • Heavy dirt, debris or tree-sap accumulation

 

Some controlled movement is expected in a flexible shade net structure. Increasing looseness, pronounced ballooning or a noticeable change in movement should, however, be investigated.

 

A rusted or frayed cable hidden inside the perimeter seam can damage the shade net from within. Brown marks, abrasive wear or protruding wire strands may be warning signs that the cable requires replacement.

 

What Should Be Checked on the Steel Framework?

Inspect the supporting steelwork for:

 

  • Peeling, flaking or blistering paint

  • Surface rust or rust staining

  • Advanced corrosion or visible metal loss

  • Cracked welds

  • Loose, missing or corroded fasteners

  • Bent or deformed steel members

  • Movement at connections

  • Leaning or displaced columns

  • Cracks or movement around foundations

  • Water collecting around column bases

  • Damage caused by vehicles, trees or other impacts

 

Minor surface corrosion and deteriorating paintwork do not automatically mean that the structure needs replacement. Timely surface preparation, rust treatment and repainting can considerably extend the life of structurally sound steelwork.

 

Severe corrosion, deformation, failed connections or movement within the structure requires a closer professional assessment.

 

What Should Be Checked on a Solid-Roof Carport?

Solid-roof carports require inspection of both the steel structure and the roof covering.

 

Check for:

 

  • Loose, lifted or missing roof sheets

  • Rusted or damaged roof-sheet fixings

  • Corrosion, cracks or holes in the roof sheets

  • Water leaks or stains beneath the roof

  • Loose, damaged or poorly sealed flashing

  • Damaged sealants or washers

  • Blocked, loose or leaking gutters

  • Damaged or disconnected downpipes

  • Water overflowing or draining towards foundations

  • Unusual roof movement or noise during windy weather

  • Ponding water where the roof should drain freely

 

Roof-sheet problems should be corrected before repeated movement enlarges fixing holes, damages the sheets or allows water to reach the supporting steelwork.

 

Warning Signs Requiring Prompt Attention

Arrange a professional inspection promptly if you notice:

 

  • A column or structural member leaning or moving

  • A broken weld or failed connection

  • Severe corrosion, perforation or visible metal loss

  • A loose roof sheet that could detach

  • A badly torn or excessively loose shade net

  • Major ballooning that has developed or worsened

  • A frayed perimeter cable or protruding wire strands

  • Cracking or movement around foundations

  • Damage following a vehicle or tree impact

  • Any component that appears unstable or unsafe

 

Keep people and vehicles away from the affected area if there is a reasonable possibility that part of the structure, shade net or roof covering could fall or detach.

 

Professional Maintenance at Approximately Five Years

At approximately five years, we recommend a professional inspection and preventative-maintenance service.

 

For a serviceable shade net structure, this may include:

 

  • Inspecting the shade net, seams, joins and perimeter cable

  • Removing and washing the shade net using an appropriate controlled method

  • Allowing the washed shade net to air-dry sufficiently

  • Restitching its seams and joins

  • Repairing suitable localised damage

  • Checking and correcting the tension

  • Replacing deteriorated cable, fasteners or fittings where necessary

  • Treating developing steel corrosion

  • Refurbishing the steel paintwork

  • Inspecting welds, connections, columns and foundations

 

Washing can remove accumulated dirt and make the shade net appear noticeably brighter and newer before it is restitched and refitted.

 

Some deeply embedded contamination, particularly hardened tree sap, may not be completely removable without risking damage, discolouration or weakening of the shade net fibres. Preserving the material’s integrity takes priority over attempting to remove every stain.

 

For a solid-roof carport, the five-year assessment should also cover the roof sheets, fasteners, flashing, gutters, downpipes, drainage and any developing leaks.

 

Professional Assessment at Approximately Ten Years

At approximately ten years, the complete structure should be assessed again.

 

Our general maintenance recommendation includes:

 

  • A second refurbishment of the steel paintwork

  • Inspection of all welds, fasteners, connections, columns and foundations

  • Assessment of the shade net’s strength, flexibility, wear and tension

  • Planning for shade net replacement where its condition requires it

  • Replacement of deteriorated cable, fittings and fasteners

  • Inspection and repair of solid roof sheets, flashing and drainage components

 

In our experience, correctly installed and maintained shade nets commonly remain serviceable for approximately 10 to 15 years. Their actual lifespan depends on the product specification, installation quality, wind exposure, weather conditions, daily UV exposure, surrounding shade and the maintenance they have received.

 

Age is therefore a useful maintenance guide, but the shade net’s physical condition should determine whether it is repaired or replaced.

 

Can Property Owners Perform Their Own Inspection?

Property owners can perform routine visual checks safely from ground level and photograph anything that appears unusual.

 

Avoid climbing onto shade netting or roof sheets, attempting structural repairs, loosening fittings or adjusting cables without the appropriate equipment and experience.
